Our team has closely monitored the smartphone versus feature phone race for quite some time. Last year, smartphones finally inched their way ahead of the feature phone and became the majority device for most American mobile subscribers. This holds true for 5 other countries as well, Norway, Sweden, Australia, the UK and South Korea.
Nielsen has released its most recent report and found that not only is the smartphone the majority but its penetration has hit 61%! That gap between smartphones and feature phones has certainly widened.
Of the 61% of U.S. smartphone users, 53% use Android as their OS while 40% use Apple iOS. The final 7% are made up of BlackBerry (3%), Windows (2%) and “Others” (2%). Asian-Americans lead the ownership rate at 75% as does the age bracket of 25-34 at 78%. A majority of all other demographics has seen an increase in ownership in the past year.
